ESL Rural Routes Newsletter
Dear ESL/ EAL/ ELL coordinators, instructors, and tutors:
Rural Routes is thrilled to launch Part 2 the Practices of an ESL Instructor Self- Assessment Tool (PEISAT). This tool adapts core principles from the ATESL Best Practices document (2009) into manageable “I can” statements designed to promote self-reflection and self- assessment in the work of ESL practitioners.
All ESL coordinators, instructors, and tutors are invited to complete the tool. Coordinators, please forward this tool to your tutors and instructors as we may not have contact information for them. Part 1 was launched last month, and Part 2 is being launched today. So far 121 ESL practitioners have participated in part 1 of PEISAT!  This self-assessment tool should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Topics addressed in Part 2:
Teaching pronunciation
Teaching vocabulary
Teaching grammar
• Technology
• Teaching literacy learners
Topics addressed in Part 1:
• Determining needs for learners
• Planning instruction
• Canadian Language Benchmarks
• Teaching the four skills
Based on results gathered from your community, your organization will receive a customized professional development plan with recommended ESL training services and referrals.
This launch of PEISAT will allow Rural Routes to develop a baseline of the self-assessed knowledge, confidence, and experience of ESL providers in rural Alberta. It will also enable us to identify and develop additional workshops and training services that are needed in our communities. Once a baseline has been set, your Rural Routes consultant will be able to use this tool on a more personal basis in the future.
Please be assured that all your responses are confidential, and individuals will not be identified without their written consent.
If you wish to talk to the Rural Routes Project Manager about this self-assessment tool, we encourage you to contact Barb Hudkins at 780-644-6758 during regular business hours. Barb will be happy to address your questions and concerns.
