Note: All Attendees must login at least 10-15 minutes early for each session. The login link will be sent  1-2 days prior to the commencement of the program to the email address used on the submitted non-credit registration.

Intercultural Communication Series Level 1, 2 and 3

Level 1

In this first course participants are exposed to Indigenous history as well as theories of intercultural competency. Participants will explore ways to develop cross cultural leadership tools intended to support a diverse workplace and learning community. Participants will apply the acquired knowledge via case studies, online discussions, reflective practices.
 
Module 1: Foundations in Intercultural Communications 
Participants will:
  • Identify and define key terms of intercultural communication.  
  • Identify their learning of intercultural competence in regard to various First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples  
  • Understand that the lands in Canada have been occupied by Indigenous people since time immemorial.  
  • Self-place and self-identify in a relational way. 
Module 2: Aspects of culture
Participants will:
  • Investigate culture more deeply by examining various aspects of culture that shape individual and group behaviour. We will also examine different worldviews. 
  • Connect the concepts of relationship and land by learning about Indigenous world view. 
Module 3: Self-awareness challenging assumptions
Participants will:
  • Develop skills and language to reflect on their own intercultural development journey. 
  • Explore some of the barriers to intercultural development and being an effective intercultural communicator. 
  • Identify beliefs and stereotypes they have about Indigenous people.
Module 4: Strategies and approaches for navigating culture
Participants will:
  • Explore different approaches and skills that foster effective intercultural communication.
  • Reflect on impact vs. intention.
Module 5:  The Role of Culture and Communication in the Socialization Process
Participants will:
  • Learn the importance of the social dimension of communication based on two fundamental factors:
    • Each person is born in a particular culture with its perspective, way of thinking and action.
    • Each person is born in a particular society, a community that has certain expectations of its members, certain modes of interaction, etc.

Level 2

In this second level of the intercultural communication series level, participants dive deeper into Indigenous history, knowledge and experiences as well as theories of intercultural competency. Participants will explore ways to develop cross cultural leadership tools intended to support a diverse workplace and learning community. Participants will apply the acquired knowledge via case studies, online discussions, reflective practices.

Module 1 Humility & History
Participants will:

  • Explore the concept of humility and how it is integral to the development of intercultural competence.
  • Learn histories of select Indigenous, Metis, Inuit, and immigrant/newcomer populations.

Module 2 Intersections of Power and Privilege
Participants will:

  • Delve deeper into intersectionality and investigate how intersections and histories shape and are shaped by power and privilege

Module 3 Treaties
Participants will:

  • Go deeper into bias, assumption and attitudes when it comes to who adapts to who. 

Module 4 The Indian Act
Further to the view that Indigenous people were impeding the European settlement of land in what we now know as Canada, the government sought to eradicate what was commonly referred to as the “Indian Problem”. This module will take an in-depth analysis of the Indian Act and the impacts its role in residential schools and the 60’s scoop.

Module 5 Assemble Learning
Participants will:

  • Put together concepts learned to explore a cultural encounter using the models, theories and concepts provided throughout the program.

Level 3

In this third level of the intercultural communication series, participants further examine core concepts and theories on cultural competence. This level provides participants with an opportunity to critically examine their own socio-cultural locations to raise intercultural awareness, assist in intercultural mindset development, and facilitate intercultural competence development.
 
Module 1
In level 2 participants discussed cultural humility and how our perspective of history may not be the only one. In addition, how we must be humble and make room for other realities and truths. In this module, participants will further examine what it means to be culturally responsive. 
 
Module 2
In level 2 participants started to consider their own intersectionality, that is, aspects of our identity, in terms of those that are given, chosen and their core. This time participants will consider aspects of their identity more deeply by examining their own power and privilege.

Module 3
In module three we begin talking about the experience of being new in a cultural setting. Participants will engage with core concepts related to culture and will explore their own values, beliefs, and identities. Participants will then analyze cultural transition processes including acculturation, stress, coping, and adjustment, and continue developing strategies and approaches.

Module 4 Wrap-up & Review
In this module, we return to review the learnings throughout level 3 with elements of understanding from levels 1 and 2. Additionally, offer practical suggestions to guide the next phase of their ICC journey.

Module 5 Complete Intercultural Developmental Inventory
Completing the IDI – after participants complete the IDI inventory they will debrief with a Qualified Adminstrator, this is a great opportunity for participants to explore their ability to recognize and adapt to difference and also provides participants with a development plan to support them on their journey,
